INTERNSHIPS

The SDF faculty will assist students in securing internships in the field for their junior spring semester, summer and senior year.  Students do internships in a variety of areas including branding, marketing, event planning, marketing research, graphic design and digital marketing at both entrepreneurial and established firms.

Many opportunities are also available for students to hone their design skills at centers across the University of Maryland campus, from the Diamondback to the Smith school.

Students can earn academic credit for their internships through OCS in the fall and spring semesters and through the marketing department's course, BMGT 357, in the summer.

Hear from some of our alumni!

  • Where did you intern?

    RedPeg Marketing in Alexandria, VA

    What was your title?

    Social and Digital Marketing Intern

How did you get your internship?

I previously won a scholarship from RedPeg, and applied when Professor Harms sent out the application through e-mail.

What were some of your day-to-day functions?

Designing social content, updating the company website, researching, and designing internal materials/slide decks

How did your experience in Design Fellows help you with your internship?

Design Fellows taught me design thinking which was beneficial for researching RFPs and for my intern project. I also used the design skills I gained everyday, which helped me fill a gap that was present in the office.

If you could give advice to current/incoming design fellows, what would you say?

Put your all into everything (future you will thank you)

Feel free to reach out to Emily at emilyrosegorey@gmail.com

  • Where did you intern?

    HZ in Rockville, MD

    What was your title?

    Interactive Design Intern

How did you get your internship?

Sending far too many e-mails to the recruiting and HR department.

What were some of your day-to-day functions?

Designing wireframes, data visualization, UX/UI audits, design support

How did your experience in Design Fellows help you with your internship?

Without taking 458R, I would have never had the work in my portfolio that ultimately got me the internship. Before taking that class, I had no idea what interactive design was, and now I want to pursue a career in the field.

If you could give advice to current/incoming design fellows, what would you say?

Don’t be afraid to reach out to recruiters! If you want a job, follow up with them weekly, and put some personality into your e-mails. (After weeks of sending an e-mail to the recruiter at an agency, I sent the same exact e-mail with a cat gif. That’s how I got a response.)

  • Where did you intern?

    LinkedIn in San Francisco, CA

    What was your title?

    Global Sales Organization Intern

How did you get your internship?

    Networking, cold-messaging, applying online

What were some of your day-to-day functions?

Messaging and interviewing experienced sales candidates with 5-7 years of experience and interviewing our segment’s top performing sales account executives to create a success playbook that incoming representatives still receive today.

How did your experience in Design Fellows help you with your internship?

SDF helped me develop a great eye for design that blew my manager away when I had to make a slide deck. It also taught me it’s okay to not be an expert at everything.

If you could give advice to current/incoming design fellows, what would you say?

No dream is too ambitious and no role or company is out of reach. If you are meant to be in a role/company, you CAN make it happen.

Feel free to reach out to David on LinkedIn (Don’t forget to add a note when sending your connection request)
