MARY HARMS

Mary Harms joined University of Maryland in 2001. She is a marketing associate clinical professor, program champion for the Strategic Design Fellows, founder of the Young Alumni Marketing Council, and the academic coordinator for marketing internships. Throughout her academic career, she has also taught courses in services marketing, integrated marketing communications, sales management, personal sales, global marketing and an honors seminar on creativity and leadership in business. In the Fall of 2008, she and Design Professor Ruth Lozner created the Design and Innovation in Marketing Undergraduate Fellows Program, now known as Strategic Design Fellows Program.

She has taught undergraduate business students abroad in the following courses: The Business of British Design and Culture, The Business of French and Dutch Design and Culture and the Business of Italian Design and Culture and Global Marketing in Australia.  

She has received the Krowe Award for Teaching Effectiveness three times and the Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Awards in 2020.

She has a B.A. in Graphic Design, a B.S. in Interior Design and an M.S. in Business, all from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.  She has worked as a graphic designer in Phoenix, Arizona and an interior designer in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Madison, Wisconsin.  Early in her professional career, she created and managed a collection of home decorative accessories stores for 15 years.

BETH BAGLEY

Beth Bagley has more than 17 years of experience in the creative industry primarily working with nonprofit marketing and creative teams. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in Graphic Design and Photography from the University of South Alabama and her master's in Design Management and Communications from Georgetown University. Additionally, she has professional certifications in UX Design and Accessibility Design from the Interaction Design Foundation. 

In addition to her experience in the creative industry, Beth has taught at multiple levels of education from teaching elementary through high school English in South Korea, to most recently as an Adjunct Instructor at Southern New Hampshire University, facilitating the senior portfolio course which guides students on how to build a brand identity and creative portfolio in preparation for their professional design careers.

Beth is currently the Assistant Director of Design & Branding for the American Geophysical Union in Washington, DC. 

LANCE WAIN

Lance Wain is the adjunct professor for the capstone course in the program.  When not in the classroom, his full-time responsibility is that of Principal, President of Grafik Marketing Communications, a top Washington, D.C.-based branding agency.  Clients for his agency include Accenture, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, T. Rowe Price, British Telecom, Gannett Digital, The Baltimore Ravens, Verizon Wireless, The Prostate Cancer Foundation and Software AG. 

 

Lance is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.A. and a Masters in International Management.  He’s also a faithful follower of UMD athletics.
